A Message from the President

The desire to promote cooperative international scholarship was instrumental in the founding of The University of Tuebingen. The University's founder , Count Eberhard im Barte (1445 - 1496), spoke of his desire "to help clear the well-springs of life, so that from them, from the ends of the earth, a never-ending stream of comforting, healing wisdom for the quelling of the searing fires of man' s irrationality and blindness might be created."

Today, more than five hundred years later, scientists and students, "from the ends of the earth" come to Tuebingen, all of them motivated by the quest for excellence in scholarly research and teaching.

Such international cooperation is increasingly important in all areas of research and university education. Members of The University of Tuebingen are vitally interested in establishing cooperative relationships with research institutions world-wide. And our international colleagues continue to seek information about current areas of research and teaching in Tuebingen.

Until now this information has been available only in our German language Forschungsbericht. With the present brochure, we present for the first time an academic profile of The University of Tuebingen in the English language.

The purpose of the brochure is to meet the increasing international demand for information about the university. The brochure contains general information about the university and its history, as well as the names and addresses of all faculties and institutions. Most importantly, the brochure presents the current areas of study and research in all of the university' s faculties and interdisciplinary research groups.

The brochure will be regularly updated and new editions made available. Our goal is to enhance cooperative international research relationships. I hope this first edition will meet the needs of international scholars, researchers and students seeking information about The University of Tuebingen.
